Kittens are typically given a series of 2-3 immunizations depending on lifestyle (indoor vs. outdoor), and where they were obtained (rescue, shelter, feral, or from a breeder).
First veterinary visit (6-9 weeks of age)
Second veterinary visit (10-14 weeks of age)
Third veterinary visit (12-16 weeks of age)
All male and female cats should be neutered (castration in males) and spayed (ovariohysterectomy in females) between 6-8 months of age.
At Orion Animal Hospital we feel strongly that declawing can be done in the most humane way when performed in small kittens from 3-6lb of body weight (usually 3-6 months of age). When kittens become larger they have much higher risk of complications including personality change, chronic pain, excess bleeding, and infection. We strongly discourage all owners NOT to pursue declaw in cats older than 1 year of age. When performed at the appropriate age, with a good combination of anesthesia, pain relief, and good surgical technique, indoor-only kittens can do quite well with a declaw procedure.
